The Slanket Phenomenon

without comments

What could be better on those long winter evenings that to wrap yourself up snuggly and warkm in a Slanket and hang out in front of the Television.

Just over ten years ago, during the a biting cold Maine winter, Gary Clegg ripped a hole in the side of his sleeping bag so he could switch channels and in that moment, a new phenomenon was born.

He commisioned his mother to sew him a cosy blanket with sleeves, and from the there the idea grew into a full time business.Since then, the Slanket and it’s commercial rivals the Snuggie and the Toasty Wrap (these last two rumoured to be the same product under different names), have sold in their millions.

The products have been promoted on Television by various stars.Presenters of the Today show appeared on screen in Slankets, they have appeared in NBC’s ’30 Rock’, and one even made a guest appearance in the finals of Big Brother 11.

They have also taken their fair share of abuse with Eleen DeGeneres and Jay Leno mocking an unintentionally funny infomercial along with the hundreds of parodies that have appeared on YouTube.

Despite this, the cult of the Snuggie or Slanket continues to grow – with pub crawls being organized, with all participants wrapped up in the garments and people finding alternative uses for them, wearing them to sports games.

Not wanting to rest on their laurels, the Slanket company have pushed the concept to the limit releasing the Slanket in a wide variety of colours even purple, and it’s rumoured that rock band Weezer will also be releasing their own branded version of the product.

They have also recently released the Travel Slanket, a smaller version you can wear while travelling, in the car on or a plane.

Love them or loathe them, there’s no denying the Slanket is here to stay and makes a great gift.
