The Slanket Phenomenon
What could be better on those long winter evenings that to wrap yourself up snuggly and warkm in a Slanket and hang out in front of the Television.
Just over ten years ago, during the a biting cold Maine winter, Gary Clegg ripped a hole in the side of his sleeping bag so he could switch channels and in that moment, a new phenomenon was born.
He commisioned his mother to sew him a cosy blanket with sleeves, and from the there the idea grew into a full time business.Since then, the Slanket and it’s commercial rivals the Snuggie and the Toasty Wrap (these last two rumoured to be the same product under different names), have sold in their millions.
The products have been promoted on Television by various stars.Presenters of the Today show appeared on screen in Slankets, they have appeared in NBC’s ‘30 Rock’, and one even made a guest appearance in the finals of Big Brother 11.
They have also taken their fair share of abuse with Eleen DeGeneres and Jay Leno mocking an unintentionally funny infomercial along with the hundreds of parodies that have appeared on YouTube.
Despite this, the cult of the Snuggie or Slanket continues to grow – with pub crawls being organized, with all participants wrapped up in the garments and people finding alternative uses for them, wearing them to sports games.
Not wanting to rest on their laurels, the Slanket company have pushed the concept to the limit releasing the Slanket in a wide variety of colours even purple, and it’s rumoured that rock band Weezer will also be releasing their own branded version of the product.
They have also recently released the Travel Slanket, a smaller version you can wear while travelling, in the car on or a plane.
Love them or loathe them, there’s no denying the Slanket is here to stay and makes a great gift.

Snuggie: A Blanket With Sleeves Keeps You Warm While Maintaining Freedom to Move
It’s a fleece blanket. It’s also a robe. It’s a Snuggie, a product that has captured the interest and curiosity of many American consumers.
According to its Web site, a Snuggie can keep you warm at home, at outdoor events, camping, and more by providing a comfortable neck cut and roomy sleeves.
Many blankets can slip and slide, plus your hands are trapped inside, but the Snuggie gives you freedom while keeping you warm. With its loose-fitting sleeves, the Snuggie keeps you warm and gives you the freedom to use your hands to do things like work the remote, use your laptop, or do some reading, its Web site says.
Shoulders, arms and upper body remain protected from the cold, but arms and hands are free because Snuggie is made of super-soft, thick, luxurious fleece with oversized loose fitting sleeves.
Snuggie Fleece Throw allows complete freedom of movement and won’t slip and slide like a regular blanket. As the temperature drops, you can keep your heating bill low and stay warm and comfy with your Snuggie Fleece Blanket. It is also ideal for staying warm at sporting events or chilly outdoor evenings, according to the company Web site.
Customers report that they have been able to reduce their heating bills through the use of the product, the company Web site states, adding that it is machine washable, which it makes it easy to maintain.
Some customer feedback gleaned from the Internet:
“I purchased the snuggie from shoptv canada and have to say once i’m in my house at the end of the day i throw on my snuggie. When i first saw it on TV i didn’t think too highly of it but now i’m glad I got it.”
Michelle Collina on jennyreviews.com
“We laughed together at the commercials. They are truly lame. Then my husband gave Snuggie’s to my daugther at college and me for Christmas. They get used all the time. I have a great paying work from home computer job and I use my snuggie all the time. If your hands get (c)old just pull them up in the sleeves.”
