I love to give nice presents.  I just don’t like the part where I have to think of exactly which present to give.  I agonize over every choice of present.  However, I have shortened my decision time a bit, now.  You see, I turn first to the Internet.  I don’t mean just to buy the present, though.  I use online research to help me think of presents long before I have to make the final decision about where to buy it.

First, a little confession:  I almost always give gift that I would actually like to receive.  No, I don’t actually have them monogramed with my initials.  I don’t carry it quite that far.

Okay, here’s an example.  I cherish food.  It’s not that I actually eat very much, it’s just that I love truly good food.  Therefore, by extension, I love to get gourmet food gift ideas.  Not just ordinary food, of course.  I never give someone a loaf of bread for a holiday, although maybe a truly great French bread wouldn’t be a bad idea, now that I think about it.  But I like to give food that is delicious and also demonstrate’s that I have considered my loved one’s tastes.  Imported (or even fine domestic) cheese, for example, is one of my favorite categories.

I’m a man, so no matter what my age (don’t ask!), I still love toys.  All men are actually just little boys who grew taller…and maybe wider.  However, given my age, my taste in toys has evolved from the toy truck to electronic gadgets.  I am constantly looking for new playthings for myself, as well as electronic gift ideas for other men.

Now, this may surprise you, but I also like jewelry gifts, so I’m always on the lookout for unique jewelry gifts.  Personally, I love watches, but my favorites are the kind that most women probably wouldn’t wear.  Instead I look to items like bracelets.  I especially like charm bracelets, since one bracelet can take care of gift ideas for several years as I add nice charms for various occasions.  I know that’s probably cheating, but, as I said:  I’m a man!

I guess the one kind of gift I don’t like is cash.  I mean, what’s the point?  If you’re going to give me twenty dollars, then I’ll give you thirty next year.  Of course, that means that you’ll have to at least match me the following year.  Let’s invest a little thought and keep the cash in our own wallets or use it to by a gift that shows that we’ve done our homework.

Please stop besmirching the good name of my favorite gift category–edible gifts.  Quit sending the boxes filled with processed cheese spreads that are mostly chemicals and the unidentifiable tubes labeled as some sort of sausage.  Extend the protest to include those tree killing enormous boxes that contain a couple apples or pears.  Those of us who live in the north can get apples and pears with real flavor every fall.

Despite my heretical words, above, I love good food gifts.  I enjoy giving them, but I enjoy receiving them even more.  However, when you send me something, please make it the same quality I give those on my gift list.  There is a difference, you know, between true quality and the convenience of buying from one of those ugly mall kiosks.  Food gifts deserve at least as much careful thought as that after-shave you bought your dad year after year in your childhood–oops, not a good example, perhaps.

Instead of that big brand name box of gelatinous cheese spreads from the mall, consider a assortment of genuine artisan cheese from some cheesemaker who actually understands what cheese is and what it can be.  Let’s keep the goats and cows happily employed instead of just putting more chemicals in our food.  Speaking of myself, and I’ll bet you, too, I would much rather have a small amount of a real cheese instead of an overpriced huge box of the fake stuff.

A wine gift basket will be a perfect gift for the appropriate recipient.  Do remember though that this gift is not suited for everyone.  Like millions of other people, I haven’t had anything alcoholic in years, because I seem to be unable to handle it.  While my sister would be properly grateful for a wine basket, I would not.  Whereas I know how to chug and pour again, she actually knows how to slowly savor each sip.

We all have a special friend or a dear relative who has moved away.  Think about a present of a gift certificate for live lobsters or even lobster dinners.  Indeed, after you read this article, I hope you feel friendly toward me, because that is a gift that I would enjoy!

While I made fun of fruit gift baskets earlier, there actually are places where you can order a basket of gourmet fruit–the kinds of fruit that I can’t find in my own back yard.  This is a terrific gift for someone who is a fitness fanatic or anyone who appreciates the simple beauty that is fruit.

See?  If you give a little thought to a food gift, stay out of the long lines at the mall kiosks, and hasten the journey of the boxes filled with fake cheese to the garbage bin, which is where they are going to end up if you send them to me.  Spend an evening with me, shopping from my home office, using the Internet for all my food gift shopping.  Just remember that you’ll have to bring your own wine, but I’ll supply the real cheese.

Many of us are faced with a time in which some of our close friends and family are enduring tough economic times. We want to help, but we also don’t want to embarass them by extending unwanted charity. If your loved one is farther away, you can arrange for any of a large range of beautiful fruit gift baskets to be delivered to the recipient’s home. It will help them to reduce their grocery bill on their next trip to the super market.

A special meal is another way to remember a birthday or holiday. One possibility might be to take the friend or family member to a popular local restaurant. If price is no object to you, be sure to recommend a couple of the more expensive entrees on the menu, so that your guests know that they should not worry about ordering what they want. For example, you might say something like, “The crab legs are wonderful here, but, if you don’t like seafood, try the tender and tasty filet mignon.” If they live too far away for that, you can actually find delicious, gourmet, chef-prepared meals online that arrive frozen and can be heated in almost no time. (I actually keep my freezer stocked with these.)

You might also consider a tasty dessert. No person should have too many desserts, but on a birthday, anniversary or holiday, everyone deserves an opportunity to indulge a sweet tooth. Bake cookies, if that is a skill of yours, and hand deliver or have them delivered. For something a little more special consider giving them a freshly baked pie or turtle cheesecake. Whether you make it yourself or have others do the work for you doesn’t matter. It will be appreciated and definitely enjoyed either way.

You may observe that all my recommendationinvolve food. Someone who is going through a difficult time may not want to accept charity, but nobody can reject a genuinely special gift. If it reduces the grocery bill by a bit, that’s just a bonus. To make it even most festive, invite yourself to share in the delights with them!

Teenagers love anything having to do with music. Whether it be compact disc to MP3’s. You can never go wrong with any of these as long as you get the right songs and groups that are in with their crowd these days. Tarot card kits, cameras and crafting kits are also high on teenagers list of items they would like. They are also coming around to loving anything retro like old records and players too. Remote control toys and kits are a sure way to get your son’s attention during the holiday time of year as will the perfect video game and system.

College age young adults really want gift ideas they can use in their down time to relax and do in the comfort of their dorm rooms. Arts of any kind as in painting sets, sketching and sewing are great things to wrap up for them. The young adult guys like anything that has music to do with it instruments, handheld games you name it they want it. When you come to buy a gift for a woman you might find that this is a trickier task than you had originally thought. It will, of course, depend massively on whom you are buying for and what your relationship is to that particular woman. If, however, you have saved up for a more extravagant gift, then something like a gorgeous piece of jewellery will be always warmly received.

It is always important to be careful about what you are buying as well, as some things might not be appropriate. For example, you may have a friend who is always trying to lose weight. You may think it a good idea but getting her some weight loss books may be a tad insensitive.

You may also think about getting a jokey gift if you are not so sure of which way to go or you are just looking to get a simple gift for someone.

We all know someone that when you pass by the vitamin store in the mall, we’re not surprised to see them browsing the shelves.  They are the health freak; that friend of ours who is always trying out the latest diet or newest exercise fad.    Or maybe they represent those among us who are trying to lose those extra pounds…for the third year in a row.    So, when their birthday comes around, it can be challenging to get them a gift that meets their healthy living. I must ashamedly tell you…I’m a gift klutz.  No, I don’t stumble and break them before giving.  My problem is that I have an impossible time deciding.  I’m just plain terrible at coming up with original gift ideas.  My solution, as you may have guessed by this time, is the Internet.

The web has plenty of both traditional and non-traditional present ideas  Of course I know that a lot of the people making suggestions are actually trying to get me to spend my hard earned money.  Actually, I don’t even object to that.  I’d actually be willing to pay someone just to make the decision for me, so why not buy their products if they can come up with good ideas.  In my country, that’s the patriotic way to look at it!

Where else except the Internet could I have learned that I could send my mom a New York style cheesecake instead of the same boring chocolate cake I usually sent her?  Fortunately, I can stretch this one idea out for many years simply by changing the flavor of cheesecake from one birthday to the next.

My daughter, who apparently gets her creative gift giving skills from me, found a jewelry idea for her aunt (on the good side of the family–not mine).  It worked out beautifully for her but it raised the bar to a higher standard for me.

You can find gift ideas by searching for age groups, say teenagers (with whom I most the most trouble) and children.  You can also use a search engine to find articles recommending gifts of all the gift giving occasions from Bat Mitzvahs or Easter, birthdays to graduations, or even what I lovingly refer to as the “Hallmark holidays,” such as Valentine’s Day or Sweetest Day or take your terrier to work day.  You can even search by the category of the item that you want to give.  For example, you might know that you want to give a video game for a Playstation, a piece of jewelry that includes diamonds (you’ve just moved out of my price range) or even a gift for a dog.

There are lots of entire website pages and sites created for gift klutzes just like me where people publish ideas.  It seems that they have so many ideas they can afford to give them away.  If you have any great gift ideas, consider sharing them with me so that I can steal them from you and take the credit.  Just publish them online.  Thanks, in advance.
