How To Throw A Kid’s Birthday Party
A child’s birthday is both an exciting day for the kid and a proud moment for the parents. Throwing a birthday party for their son or daughter and their friends can be stressful though – it has to go well and the child has to enjoy it. Here are some handy tips to getting it just right.
First of all, you need to sort out the guest list. Ask your child who they want to invite and, perhaps more importantly, who they don’t. Obviously the older the child the more sense this makes, but you still want to make sure that the guests are those your child wants to be there.
You will also know from your experience at school who is in your child’s class and who their friends are, so don’t be afraid of inviting some he or she doesn’t mention.
Now you need to decide on a theme and one great option is fancy dress. Kids love to dress up and if you pick a specific theme then you can base your whole party, including the fancy dress around it. Pick something the kids know well – Disney films or Superheroes for example – and they will enjoy it more.
Send out your invites with the date, time, occasion and the theme of the party. In this example we’ll use Disney films so your invite should ask guests to come dressed as Disney characters.
Now you need to think about the cake and the food and drink. The cake should reflect the theme and any decent cake maker will be able to design and make one in the form of a Disney character or similar. And, of course, you need the number of candles to match the age of your child!
Food should be a mix of sweet and savoury. You want the children to eat something healthy but it is a birthday party, so something sweet should be included!
Sandwiches, an array of vegetable sticks (eg. carrot, cucumber, celery) with dips and cheese and pineapple on sticks will cover this just fine. As your theme is Disney, you could get some American sweets and potato chips instead of normal sweets and crisps. It’ll really add to the theme.
Examples include Hershey Caramel Kisses, Tootsie Rolls and you could even try Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Potato chips like Fritos can be put in bowls on the table as well.
Organise lots of games for the kids to play and keep to the theme. This is where your imagination really comes into play. You can base your games on traditional party games but give them a Disney twist!
What about Pin the Tail on the Donkey – but make the donkey the one from Shrek. Or Pass the Parcel with the prize a Disney toy. Musical Chairs will work just fine with songs and music from a variety of Disney films. The options are endless if you think about it.
For a bit of quiet time, sit the kids down in front of your child’s favourite Disney movie – though getting 10-20 children to sit quietly through a film might be a challenge, so be prepared to abandon that one in favour of more games.
The important thing to remember is that this is your son or daughter’s party and they will want to end the day with a big smile, a sleepy head and some fantastic memories. All it takes is a little planning and a lot of imagination!

Planning A Birthday Party
The next time you are in charge of planning a birthday party, try not to stress too much over it. If you are trying to come up with ideas on how to ensure that it is a great birthday for someone special, then consider throwing some type of a theme party. It can be relatively easy to come up with ideas for the type of party you should plan by considering the person’s age, gender and most importantly, their personality.
For example, for a “Sweet 16″ get together, consider a Glamour Shots type of party complete with gowns, gloves, makeup, etc. This is a perfect birthday bash for your teen as they can get dressed up in whatever they want and apply make-up and then be ready for their close-up. It is a good idea to start gathering different types of clothes and shoes; a thrift shop is ideal for choosing some clothes. It is advisable to have each girl bring their own brush and make-up or you can purchase individual kits for each girl and let them keep them as party favors. You can make a copy of the pictures and include them with a thank you note from the birthday girl.
If you are looking for a unique and fun theme for a birthday party, then consider having a movie night theme. It is relatively easy to plan. For the invitations you can make movie tickets with Admit One on each one and all of the birthday bash information on them as well. For refreshments, you can put out bowls of popcorn and sodas and the birthday cake can be decorated as an old-fashioned film reel or something similar.
For an unforgettable winter birthday bash consider a beach theme. For the invitations, purchase several beach balls and write the party information on them in permanent ink with instructions to blow them up when they are received. You can also ask everyone to come dressed in beach attire, Hawaiian shirts, etc. You can hang beach towels on the walls, scatter some seashells around the room and hang fish nets for an authentic feel. For a truly amazing effect, if you don’t mind the mess, you can cover the floor with sand.
Party planning for a teen’s birthday can be a little intimidating, but consider creating invitations done in calligraphy style, rolled up as a scroll and tied with a ribbon inviting everyone to a Medieval Time birthday party. Perhaps have a birthday cake that has been decorated as an elaborate castle and have friends dress as King and Queen to greet the guests at the door. This type of party is a sure hit with the birthday boy or girl and their friends.

Planning Birthday Parties
Many people, especially kids, think that birthday parties are the best part of having a birthday and perhaps they are right. Who doesn’t love having a particular day on which they are honored and perhaps even have a special event planned just for them? Many times people stress over whether or not they should worry about planning a particular theme for a party and if so, what should that theme be? Of course, that usually depends upon the age and relationship of the birthday boy or girl.
Some parents may think that having a birthday party for a one year old is a little silly, yet others feel that the first birthday is very special and will usually plan a big party. This may actually be the easiest one for a theme since it mainly centers on the family and the new parents have probably had it planned for a while. However, even if it is not for a 1st birthday, there are different themes that you can choose for practically anyone.
Planning birthday parties for young boys is actually fairly easy, as many of them are just starting to get into different sports and a sports theme is normally a safe bet. You have a huge selection of choices when it comes to choosing a particular sport; for example, a baseball themed birthday bash is a great choice and pretty simple to plan. Consider using party invitations that are in the shape of a baseball mitt or even just a baseball and for snacks you can always set up your own concession stand along with bowls of peanuts placed around the room. For the birthday cake consider one in the shape of a mitt with a smaller cake shaped like a baseball inside the mitt. A cut-out baseball diamond is a great place to stack those birthday gifts until it is time to open them.
Of course, there are many different themes for girls as well; you can always go with a tea party theme. For invitations you can use real tea bags and replace the original tag with one that you have written all of the pertinent information on. Decorate a fresh white table cloth with birthday flowers and for party favors you can give each girl a demitasse cup with her name on it.
Party planning can make people feel stressed, but the purpose should be to show the birthday girl or boy exactly how special they are to you. Birthday parties obviously come from the heart and with a little effort on your part you can be assured that they will have a great birthday and realize how much you care about them.

Taking A Look At The Birthday Paradox
The birthday coincidence or paradox results when two people within a group share the same date of birth. Surprisingly, in order to have a fifty/fifty probability of sharing the same birthday, there is only a small group of people required, rather than the more expected thought of needing a large group.
To show how to calculate the probability of a group finding such a match, before setting off to find the perfect birthday present , it is simpler to first find the probability of all the birthdays being different. Consider a group of two people. The first person could have been born on any of the 365 days of the year, while the second must have been born on one of the other 364 days in order to not match. The first person has a probability of 365/365, which equals 1.0, and the second has a probability of 364/365 which is 0.9973. Multiplying these probabilities together gives a net probability of 0.9973 for having different birthdays. Subtracting this number from 1.0 gives a 0.0027 probability of having the same date of birth.
When you add a third person to the group they have only 363 days to miss having the same birthdays as the first two people. Meaning they have a probability of 363/365, or 0.9945 and when you multiply this to the previous results it results in a 0.9918 chance of them having the same birthday. The probability results of 0.0164 (1-0.9836) of having matching birthdays is the result when you add a fourth person to the group.
As you add more and more people to the group, the number of non-matching days available continues to decrease; and the probability of everyone celebrating a different birth day decreases. The probability of there being two children born on the same day increases and continues to multiply more and more, smaller and smaller fractions, a point near 0.5 is exceeded as soon as the group consists of 23 people. And, once you have 80 people in the group, only one time in ten thousand will everyone celebrate different birthdays.
Although it can be interesting to take a topic and dissect it in this manner, most people do not look at birthdays in this type of analytical terms. Instead, it is considered to be a very special day for a very special person, or in the case of multiple births, very special people. A birthday celebration complete with a birthday cake, birthday gifts and perhaps birthday flowers is the most traditional way that people celebrate someone’s birthday; leaving all of the probabilities, percentages and equations to those who prefer statistics over the more sentimental reasoning.
